THE RUSSIAN CHURCH

The Russian Church of St. Mary Magdalene, with its 7 striking onion-shaped spires
, is a fine example of old moscovite church style. It was built in 1888
by Czar Alexander III in memory of his mother and named after Saint Mary Magdalene.
It is maintained by the white Russian nuns. In the crypt  lies the body
of the Grand Duchess Elizabeth Feodronova, sister of the Empress Alexander.
She was killed in 1918 in Siberia by the Bolsheviks – and in accordance
with her wishes her body was brought to Jerusalem for burial.
